Devon Rexi
Devon Rexi is an Amsterdam-based collective operating somewhere in the nether regions of dub, post-punk, and psych-funk. Folding in turntablism, heavily distorted voices, and elastic grooves, the band is driven by a loose no-wave sensibility. On releases such as Khabe Bad and Biya Ba Man, percussion-led tracks spiral into lopsided workouts; vocals – laden with effects and sung in Farsi – are treated more as texture than narrative, with rhythm taking precedence over form. Plenty of weirdness, but in the best way. Rooted in the close-knit community around the South Of North label, the Rexi clan thrives on collaboration and the simple joy of playing it out together. And if you don’t quite get your fill, catch founding member Nic Mauskovic (aka Nicolini) for a live, solo performance at the Amsterdamse Bos.
